Low Vision Clinic in Toronto

What is Low Vision?

Low vision is a term used to describe uncorrectable vision loss that interferes with one’s daily life. This visual impairment cannot be corrected by surgery, medical therapy, or corrective lenses. Individuals with low vision may experience a combination of various symptoms such as:

  • Loss of colour vision

  • Loss of central and/or peripheral vision

  • Difficulties adjusting to changes in lighting, contrast and glare

Although it is not possible to restore vision that has been lost, there are several ways we can help manage your individual needs if you happen to be suffering from the symptoms associated with low vision.

What is Low Vision Rehabilitation?

Low vision rehabilitation is the practice of teaching low vision patients how to utilize and/or maximize their remaining functional vision. This in turn allows patients to be more independent, increase their self-esteem and live a fuller life.

There are many services and techniques that can be employed to do so, one of which is the enhancement of vision through visual aids, such as:

  • Large print books and games

  • Writing guides

  • Tints

  • Specialized glasses

  • Hand-Held Devices (hand/stand magnifiers, video magnifiers, monoculars)

  • Computerized magnifying devices
